Transform Your Inner Critic into Your Biggest Cheerleader

What is the voice inside your head telling you? Is it questioning your every thought and decision?  How powerful is your inner critic? Is it pointing out all of the flaws of your idea and giving you every excuse to why things will not work out?  It may even be questioning if you are worthy, Are you enough? The voice inside our heads, our inner critic, thinks it is protecting us when it fills our thoughts with these questions.  From its point of view, it is making sure we don’t get hurt or experience failure. Instead, for a moment close your eyes.  Think of something you have been wanting to try.  Is it a class you want to take, painting, yoga, presenting a new idea at work, or applying for a new job?  Now imagine that voice, the one that so far has [...]

Recognition … Why is my natural instinct to deflect?

If you are like me, and are being honest with yourself, then we have to admit that getting recognition feels great, even incredible at times. So why…. If it feels so good to get recognition, that my natural instinct is to minimize the recognition, especially when I am talking about it with others? Ever find yourself immediately responding to recognition with… “It was nothing” “Anyone could have done it” “Just doing my job” “I couldn’t have done it without the team” “Thanks, but I didn’t get everything I wanted completed” Or some variation of these… Next time I challenge you to respond with a simple… Thank you I recently received recognition from the Dallas Business Journal for Women in Technology in North Texas. Here is the link to the article  Dallas Business Journal 2018 Women in Technology Using this opportunity to reflect on [...]

Self Confidence … Why do we struggle believing in ourselves?

I have talked with a lot of women and will admit I have been surprised at the topic that seems to come up the most often – confidence. Confidence has come up so often that I started to inquire about it … and you could say a lack of self confidence is almost an epidemic.  What has surprised me so much, is that many of the women that have told me they have confidence issues are very successful individuals.  I would have never guessed. How about you?  Would you say you have a lot of confidence? Or is this an area you would like to improve? Steps to additional confidence “Confidence comes not from always being right but from not fearing to be wrong.”  – Peter T. Mcintyre 1.  Determine if there are specific areas, times, or situations you find yourself not having [...]

The year is almost over

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who will be celebrating Thanksgiving this week.  This is a holiday I truly love.  What is better than taking time to focus on everything we have to be thankful for, spending time with family, and of course eating too much good food. Thanksgiving is also my signal that the year will soon be over.  This makes me quickly start thinking and questioning if I got everything done during year that I intended.  What do you have left to accomplish in 2017? One big item I need to finish for work at the end of every year is submitting a summary of my annual accomplishments along with comments of what has gone well and what could be improved.  The exact due date and format has changed over the years, however completing this is almost a rite of passage to being [...]

Stepping out with the courage to be seen

Welcome to my new blog, Courage to Be Seen. I’m Sherrie Clark and am the CTO for the Embedded Solutions business unit of General Electric leading a global engineering team, and probably the best part of my job has been the experience I have gotten to help others through coaching and mentoring.  Over the years I have had discussions with several women about their experiences of being in the minority of male dominated fields.  One very common theme keeps appearing in several of the discussions. Women in trying to maximize their success many times unconsciously limit portions of themselves at work.  This results in them not being authentic to themselves which limits their power and happiness, and many times spills over into other parts of their lives.  This was true for myself, until one day when I came to the realization this was [...]
